to Children in the elementary schools (1st..6th grade – 6 years old .. 12 years old)

Dear children!

To those of you who enter the elementary school, and to those of you who proceed to the next grade, we extend our warm congratulations.

We are sure that you are making many new friends in this April month, when a new school year begins.

This April should have been a month of spring with full of hope.

However, this spring has unfortunately turned out to be an extremely sad one to us all.

On 11th March 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami-waves struck Japan.

To children in the area struck by the disaster:
Some of you lost your family members. Some of you are staying in shelters.

We have received many reports that many of you are assisting the adults at shelters, helping the elders and the handicapped, cleaning, or serving meals.

We are truly grateful to you for your contributions.

We fear that many of you are new deeply sad and worried.

But please bear in mind that you will be not left alone.
We urge you to work together with your teachers and your friends to make a happy school life.

We shall do all what we can to be with you and to make your life happy.

To children in the area free from the disaster:

Some schools may receive new children seeking safety from the disaster area. We urge you to give your new friends your warmest welcome.

Some of you may not meet directly any children suffering from the disaster. We urge you to think of them as your own friends. Show your sympathy and support to those children who are now having a great difficulty. And do remember and pray for those children who lost their lives and could be with us in the new school year.

We have also received many reports that many of you are donating from your allowances and paying efforts to save the electricity to overcome the shortage.

These reports make us extremely proud of you.

We are convinced that compassion and dedication of each one of you will lead Japan to rise once gain as a nation much more wonderful than ever.

The spring will soon come to Tohoku area that suffered the heaviest damages.

Have you already learned from your teacher the expression “cherry blossom front”?

This is a line connecting the places where the first bloom of cherry blossom is observed.

Japan is a long country from the south to the north. Starting from Okinawa in the beginning of January, the cherry blossom front travels throughout the country for almost for a half year until it reaches the north tip of Hokkaido in the end of May.

Cherry blossom front demonstrates the wonderful gift of the nature, a relay of life.

The nature some time gives us harsh challenges, like the earthquake and the tsunami, Japan just experienced.

But we should remember that the nature also gives us a warm hug, as we can see in the cherry blossom front.

We urge you to join a team relaying batons of compassion traveling through Japan to your friends in the disaster area.

You can join the team by supporting the people around you, for example, by giving your seat on a train to an elderly, or by helping a handicapped. The baton of your kind deeds will be relayed by others. Such kind deeds of you all will form a front traveling throughout the country. This front will reach the disaster area together with the cherry blossom front.

Other countries from all over the world have sent batons of compassion to Japan.

Many countries have sent rescue crews and materials to Japan.

What you can do now is to work hard at school, so that you can return these batons of compassion back to the world when you have become grownups.

Please remember all the adults who now strive to help other people. Firefighters, soldiers and officers of the self-defense force, and members of the power company have been risking their lives to settle the problems at the nuclear power station struck by a serious accident. Policemen, doctors and nurses have been working hard to rescue and help people. School teachers protected the children with their all might when the earthquake and the tsunami struck.

What you can do now is to develop your body, judgment, and compassion, so that you can help other people when you have become grownups.

The Japanese government will do all what we can do with the teachers all over Japan so that you can have happy school lives.

The future of Japan rests on your shoulders.

Give courage to all the people in Japan with your smiling faces.
